Call for Presentations

Projects from practice-based artistic-design PhD programmes and independent working contexts where art, design and science overlap

As part of the "Conference on Practice-Based Research in Art and Design" which will take place at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar from 1 to 3 December 2011, we wish to offer participants the opportunity to present and discuss various artistic and design works. The conference is being developed and organized by the doctoral candidates in the PhD programme "Art and Design/Fine Art" (PhD by Project)at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in cooperation with advising professors and coordinators.

The presentation programme will provide participants a venue in which they can present and discuss developments in the fields of Artistic Research and Design Research along with their forms of reflection. The event will allow them to share their expertise regarding new cultural techniques, thematic complexes and patterns of action in these research areas. At the same time, the programme will give doctoral candidates from a wide range of practice-based PhD programmes at German, European and international art and design colleges and universities the chance to engage in fruitful dialogue. We invite you to present your PhD projects, completed or as works in progress, in a personal, 20-minute presentation. You may naturally include objects or illustrations to supplement your presentation.

We are particularly interested in discussing the following questions: What methods and procedures distinguish your area of research? What new questions are generated by practice-based research methods? We are also curious about your personal career ambitions. What led you to begin a PhD programme? What do you hope to achieve in your professional future? What opportunities does your academic institution offer post-grads? What personal reasons did you have as an artist or designer to work in an area where art and science overlap?

Please submit your presentation proposals using the provided online form to presentations@practice-based-research.com by 15 June, 2011. Please include a one-page abstract describing the goals and anticipated results of your PhD research project, the activities you plan or have already carried out, your background and methods, as well as the technical equipment you will need for your presentation.

A jury of students and instructors in the PhD programme "Art and Design/Fine Art" at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will review all the submissions and notify you of its decision regarding your participation in the presentation programme by 15 July, 2011.
